Ostrow School of Dentistry student Conan Teng DDS ’13 was honored for his diverse community outreach experience during the 2013 USC Community Service Awards Dinner at Town and Gown on April 16.
Ostrow Dean Avishai Sadan presented Teng with the Multiple Engagements Award, a new award honoring a student or the community partner who has been an outstanding leader and role model by engaging in multiple service partnerships.
Teng has been involved in many service programs through the Ostrow School of Dentistry, serving schoolchildren in the Mobile Dental Clinic, homeless individuals at the school’s clinics on Skid Row, former military members during Veterans Stand Down events, and more. He has also been a part of the Dental Humanitarian Outreach Program, an Ostrow student group that travels overseas annually to provide dental care in impoverished areas.
In addition to providing those in need with dental care, Teng has also served as a dental student ambassador for prospective Ostrow students and as a co-director of the Dental Explorers Program, an educational summer program for high school and college students interested in dentistry.
Following graduation, Teng plans to complete an advanced education in general dentistry program and hopes to one day complete a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He also plans to stay active in community outreach.
“Taking part in community service really rejuvenates my spirit and outlook on life,” Teng says. “Helping people to have a better life is the most beneficial service I can do. Teeth are some of the most used body parts, and having great oral health improves overall health and prospects for life as well.”
