In honor of Give Kids a Smile Day 2020 on Friday, Ostrow volunteers provided more than 50 dental screenings to fourth and fifth graders at Weemes Elementary in the Adams-Normandie area of Los Angeles. Students, staff and faculty volunteers also provided oral health education and oral hygiene instructional sessions to each grade, kindergarten through fifth.

All in all, Ostrow volunteers interacted with more than 500 children who were provided with preventive or educational services. Sealants, cleanings, fluoride varnish application, nutritional guidance and additional oral health instruction will be given to the children that received dental screenings at future appointments when Ostrow volunteers return for clinical rotations.

Ostrow attendees included six faculty members from the Division of Community Oral Health & Pediatric Dentistry, six staff members, five pediatric dentistry residents and 17 dental hygiene/DDS/ASPID students. Also in attendance were Associate Dean Roseann Mulligan and Dean Avashai Sadan.

Give Kids A Smile program was launched nationally by the American Dental Association in 2003 and has since helped more than 5.5 million underserved children receive free oral health services provided by volunteer dentists and other dental professionals.
