Faculty Appreciation Awards 2018

Every year, the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC acknowledges the men and women who inspire our students to become some of the world’s best dental professionals: our faculty members.

The 2018 Faculty Appreciation Awards & Dinner was held on May 16 at the Radisson Hotel Los Angeles Midtown at USC. This year’s awards recognized faculty members from each division as well as part-time faculty reaching milestones of five to 50 years as educators at the dental school.

DIVISION AWARDS

Division of Biomedical Sciences

Kiyomi Yamazaki
Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry
Dr. Yamazaki completed her DDS from the Pontifícia Universidade Cátolica do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and her PhD from the Tokyo Medical and Dental University. She was a post-doctorate fellow in craniofacial biology at USC and joined the faculty in 2000. Kiyomi’s dual training serves as a model for clinical relevance through knowledge of the biomedical disciplines.

Sibel Dincer

Clinical Assistant Professor
Dr. Dincer received her DDS and master’s in prosthodontics degree in Turkey, before pursuing an advanced specialty degree in orofacial pain and oral medicine from USC. She joined the Ostrow faculty in 2011 and has served as an invaluable resource for her colleagues, students and, most importantly, our patients. Sibel also incorporates the application of biomedical knowledge to clinical diagnosis and treatment planning to enhance patient care.

Denise Tefft

Clinical Assistant Professor
Dr. Tefft completed her master’s degree in physiology at Cal Poly Pomona before coming to USC to pursue a PhD in molecular biology in 2001. She first joined USC’s faculty in 2004 and came to Ostrow in 2012. By pursuing clinically relevant examples of biomedical knowledge, Tefft guides our student to pursue excellence in patient care through advances in a molecular and cell biology-based understanding of disease and regeneration..

Division of Dental Public Health and Pediatric Dentistry

Steven Hernandez

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry
Passionate about the community, committed and caring, Steven Hernandez is a 1989 DDS graduate from the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC. He maintains his private practice in Rancho Cucamonga, CA since 1994 and has been volunteering extensively with the USC Mobile Clinic for over 4 years, where loved by our dental students and patients.

Gayle Macdonald

Associate Professor Emerita of Dentistry
A legendary faculty member, Dr. Macdonald achieved the great honor to be one of the few USC Emerita Professors actively teaching. She has earned the admiration of all the students, faculty and staff working with her. She exudes wisdom, gives excellent professional advice and with her witty humor makes our days at school brighter.

Richard Mungo

Adjunct Instructor of Clinical Dentistry
A passionate advocate for children with special needs, Dr. Mungo has trained many pediatric dentists to provide oral health care to this vulnerable population. He is a former president of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry and currently serves as the Chief of the Pediatric Dentistry Section at Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

Division of Endodontics, Orthodontics, and General Practice Residency

Mary Chien

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry
Dr. Chien finished her endodontics residency at USC in 2007. Now as a faculty member, she is highly respected for her knowledge, clinical skills, devotion and personal demeanor. She says working with endodontics residents reminds her of her time as a resident and the way she was mentored by USC’s great faculty.

Peter Sinclair

Adjunct Professor of Clinical Dentistry
Dr. Peter Sinclair served as USC’s orthodontics program director for 10 years in the 1990s and 2000s. Today, as a volunteer faculty member, he teaches basic didactic orthodontics to first-year ortho students and practice management to second-year ortho students. He also prepares them for the written exam of the American Board of Orthodontics.

Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Stephen Wheeler

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry
Dr. Wheeler is a past president of the Academy of Osseointegration and a world-renowned implant surgeon.  He joined the faculty of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery four years ago and has quickly become one of the outstanding mentors for both dental students and residents.

Division of Periodontology, Diagnostic Sciences and Dental Hygiene

Razmik Galustian

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry
Dr. Galustian has a DDS degree from Azad University, Tehran, Iran. In 2010 he earned a DDS degree from UCLA. In 2013 he received his Certificate in Periodontology/Oral Implantology and a Master of Science in Oral Biology from Temple University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Audrey Boros

Clinical Assistant Professor
A native of Canada, Audrey received her Bachelor of Science in 2004 from McGill University; 2006 Master of Science in Pathology and Molecular Medicine, Queen’s University; in 2010 DDS degree from USC. Recipient of OKU, the R.L. Fowkes/L.J. Fogel Award and Albert M. Abrams Award in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Joan Sanchez

Clinical Instructor
Joan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Ecology in 2007 from UC Irvine. In 2011, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from USC. She is a member in several professional organizations, American Dental Hygiene Association, California Dental Hygiene Association and Los Angeles Dental Hygiene Society.

Division of Restorative Sciences

Joyce Kahng
Clinical Assistant Professor
Dr. Kahng joined the Division of Restorative Sciences in 2014, and her contribution and enthusiasm to teach is exemplary. She is dedicated and has been instrumental to the improvements to our preclinical curriculum. Her professionalism, positive attitude and friendly behavior are an example to her peers and students.

Albert Mizrahi

Adjunct Instructor of Clinical Dentistry
Dr. Mizhari joined the Division of Restorative Sciences in 2004. Since then, he has become a pillar for the preclinical education of our students. Students always praise his dedication and enthusiasm to new developments in dentistry. The Division of Restorative Sciences sincerely appreciates his caring attitude and high standards to teaching.

Kent Ochiai

Adjunct Professor of Clinical Dentistry
Dr. Ochiai has been instrumental to the Division of Restorative Sciences and he serves as our representative in the International Association of Dental Research. He has published and authored several papers on his research work on new concepts on restorations in dentistry, dental implants, advanced denture treatment and prosthodontics.
