Dental Hygiene Student Chosen for ADHA Student Advisory Board

Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC student Joan Beleno has been selected as one of four Student Advisory Board members to represent student issues, challenges, and viewpoints to the American Dental Hygiene Association’s Committee on Student Relations.

Beleno, a member of the Dental Hygiene class of 2011 and president of the Student American Dental Hygiene Association at USC, attended the 2010 California Dental Hygiene Association meeting, where she was elected Speaker of the House for the meeting and had the opportunity to network with CDHA and ADHA officials.

“During the CDHA meeting, I met the district delegate for California and Arizona, who encouraged me to apply for the position,” Beleno said. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to represent students and their concerns at a national level.”

Beleno’s position on the Committee on Student Relations will not only help her bring student perspectives and concerns to the ADHA’s attention but will also allow her to help plan student events for the annual ADHA meeting. She will also speak at next year’s CDHA meeting.

Diane Melrose, Chair of the Dental Hygiene Program, said Beleno’s selection for the Student Advisory Board is a testament to her involvement and leadership.

“The faculty and I are very proud of Joan’s strong leadership abilities,” Melrose said. “She truly exemplifies the gold standard of excellence in which the Dental Hygiene Program takes great pride.”
